A number of our articles and reference guides refer to using Equine Energy Points. Our contributors often recommend acupuncture, photopuncture, acupressure, Reiki and other energetic modalities. However, the feedback that I get from some readers is that these references are daunting, in that they do not feel qualified to use them for their own horses. I am here to tell you – Don’t be afraid, you too can use Equine Energy Points!
Yes, using needles, lights, special patches or targeted energy like Reiki can speed your results and may encourage dramatic responses. However, learning and using a few master points can add valuable tools to your personal tool kit. And you only need two fingers and an intention to help.
A great place to start is with the most important energy point for digestion – Stomach 36 (ST 36). This is the 36th point on the energy pathway through the body that controls the stomach and digestive function. Because of its often dramatic effect on improving digestion, we call this the “Probiotic Point”.

The easiest way to locate this point is to stand by the hip, face the horse’s head and put the palm of your nearest hand on the horse’s stifle. When you cup the stifle joint, your thumb will naturally fall into a groove in the bone just below the head of the tibia. This is ST 36.
The simplest way to effect digestion using this point is to use your middle and forefingers to rub the area above the point. Don’t panic if you are not perfectly on target, make your rubbing circles 2 or 3 inches in size in the general area will work.
If digestion is sluggish (constipation, poor appetite, colic, gas bubbles) stimulate the area with brisk, clockwise circles. If digestion is too fast (diarrhea) use calming, counter-clockwise circles. Now comes the important part – set your INTENTION for the outcome you are looking to attain.
I know that may sound woo-woo, but believe me, it works. Call it prayer, or visualization, or intention - telling the Universe the desired outcome is often the most important ingredient in healing. Made your circles in the wrong direction? No Problem! Your Intention is the essential guidance in balancing the Energy Point.
Practice using this point whether or not your horse has any digestion issues. Watch for their reaction, they may lick and chew, lift their tail and pass gas, suddenly have loud gut sounds. Let us know how you set your Intention and how your horse responds!
